Video Game Spotlight: Ōkami

Ōkami is a great action-adventure game developed by Clover and published by Capcom for the PSII and Wii. While sales of the game were poor, it earned praise from critics, loyal fans and the title of IGN’s 2006 Game of the Year.

The game-play is very similar to The Legend of Zelda franchise, which are also excellent games, so it’s not entirely a bad thing. But what makes the game stand out is its unique look and feel; the visual style of the game is inspired by sumi-e, ink wash painting, and melds perfectly with a storyline based on Shinto mythology. Shinto animism gives the game a strong ecological message and you play the role of the sun goddess Amaterasu, who took the form of a white wolf.

Fans thought a sequel would never come, but the franchise is being revived with Ōkami Chronicles: Tiny Sun, in which you play Amaterasu in the form an adorable puppy, and is set to be released later this year on the DS. So why not play them both? It’s just another reason to give this classic title a second look.
